Individual Counseling:
I work with clients of most ages. In addition to adults, I work with older children and adolescents. When working with children and adolescents, I consider parents to be a potential part of the support system. I will often engage parent support as appropriate to each client.
I believe that therapy can be a place to cultivate the myriad aspects of "who we are" that can allow us to be most fully ourselves. When we are able to be our most, this is when we can be open to the reciprocity of giving, receiving, and connecting with the rest of the world. We (each individual person) are a part of a whole. I enjoy working with clients to illuminate unique creative attributes, interests, and visions. For more on how I work with each client, feel free to check out the "approaches" section of my website.
Common areas and populations I work with within my practice include:
Family Counseling:
With families, I aim to facilitate communication, understanding, and support. Sometimes in relationships we can become who we are not. This can especially happen if we are in a constant state of stress. Our defenses (and not our selves) can take over the drivers' seats. I hold the perspective of the context that often comes into the counseling room - that life/family life involves a lot of juggling, often with not enough resources; that many families are holding too much stress - and also the belief that each family member has more than likely been doing the best they can in their circumstances. I believe family therapy can be fun and can also be an offering for families to experience and appreciate individual family members more fully. I utilize a non-blame approach. I enjoy working with traditional and non-traditional family systems.
Group Counseling and seminars: I often offer groups for adolescents. Please feel free to inquire.
Footnote:
I am a HAES (Health at Every Size) aligned therapist and am networked with other health professionals - dietitians and medical doctors- who may also be valuable members of a treatment team for clients struggling with eating disorders.
My practice is accepting and affirming.
